Durham Cathedral
When you visit County Durham, you are visiting a “kingdom within a kingdom”, where the Prince Bishops of Durham ruled with a iron fist. Chances are, the impressive Durham Cathedral will be visible from your hotel in Durham, which writer Bill Bryson reckons is "The best cathedral on Planet Earth"!

Durham Castle is a classic mote and bailey Norman castle, but the current residents can be a little scary - student from the University live there now!

Beyond Durham itself, the beautiful and dramatic hills of Teesdale provide unspoiled and uncrowded countryside as far as the eye can see. Drive to your Teesdale guest house or farmhouse bed and breakfast, and chances are, you pass cyclists enjoying the sweeping downhill rides through the valleys, then crunching their way through the gears on the hills!

Take a walk along the Pennine Way and take time to gaze at High Force, England's biggest waterfall. The, stop off for a picnic in Hamsterley Forest, or seek out the elusive red squirrel in the woodlands around Derwent reservoir, a popular place for anglers and sailing fanatics too.

A must on any short break to County Durham is a visit to Barnard Castle, both a genuine 12th century castle and the name of the town itself. The hidden gem in the town is the Bowes Museum, a French chateau that houses an eclectic mix of art and objects, including the famous silver swan automaton.
