In the north, Carlisle was first settled by the Romans when they built nearby Hadrian's Wall, although most of the Scots who cross the border these days come here for the excellent shopping! Kids of all ages will love exploring Carlisle Castle, or steaming through the countryside on the Settle-Carlisle steam railway.
