Glastonbury Tor |
Somerset is a large county that stretches from Bristol in the north to Taunton in the south, from the wilds of Exmoor in the west to the elegant city of Wells in the east. You are going probably going to need a glass or two of the local cider if you want to explore it all in a short break in Somerset!
Travel in Somerset is deceptively easy on the M5 motorway that can whisk you from top to bottom in under an hour, but leave the main road and the fantastic scenery is your reward. From the magnificent Glastonbury Tor rising out of the Somerset levels to the spooky caves at Wooky Hole, there is always something to surprise you around every corner. Stay at a farmhouse bed and breakfast, and the only wake-up call you'll need is the sound of sizzling bacon in the morning! |
Wells may be the smallest city in the UK, but its impressive cathedral and cobbled streets give it a special charm of its own. Much of Somerset echoes with ancient history, from the mystic King Arthur's Camelot at Cadbury (or so legend says), to the haunted Taunton Castle.
The Somerset coast feels as relaxed as the countryside, with elegant seaside towns such as Weston-super-Mare and Minehead offering traditional accommodation in guest houses and seaside hotels. Turn west towards Exmoor, and the coastline becomes wild and rugged, ideal for long walks and cosy pub lunches afterwards!
Traditional crafts flourish in Somerset, from the elegance of Honiton lace to the cheese makers of Cheddar Gorge. A definite must on your travels in Somerset has to be a visit to Street, home to a famous shoe factory - and its extensive outlet shopping village! |
