Angel of the North
As you drive from the south for a Tyne and Wear short break, you are welcomed by Antony Gormley's "Angel of the North". The Angel is Britain's largest sculpture, standing 60 foot tall and with a wingspan of 175 feet, welcoming you to a county that's proud of its history - and excited about its future.

The Romans built the first bridge across the River Tyne, and now the former fort on Hadrian's Wall is one of the most vibrant cities on the UK short break scene, Newcastle. Six bridges now cross the Tyne, including Robert Stephenson's road and rail bridge and the iconic Millennium bridge.
From your Newcastle hotel, you can shop until you drop in the city's three shopping centres, before ordering a reviving pint of Newcastle Brown Ale in a Newcastle local pub. Newcastle's nightclub scene is booming, so don't expect to get back to your hotel in Newcastle until the small hours! Just across the river is Gateshead, home to the magnificent Sage Gateshead centre with its wealth of music concerts and workshops.
From Newcastle, the River Tyne flows to the sea, and the coastline that makes any short break in Tyne and Wear so special. The impressive remains of Tynemouth Priory and Castle overlooks the dramatic shoreline, where the sands area ideal for walks in the freshest air imaginable. You can venture under the sea at the Blue Reef Aquarium, or get Wet'n'Wild at Europe's biggest indoor waterpark.
Wherever you stay in Tyne and Wear, you'll find so much to surprise and delight you, you'll want to come back time and time again.
